What is plopping?

Do you want to define your curls and give them more volume? Then you should try plopping - the method that gently dries the hair and preserves the curl structure. Compared to traditional rubbing with a terry cloth towel, the hair is not roughened and the curls remain free of frizz and split ends. Incredible, is not it?

But how exactly does it work? Derived from English, this technique is called “to plop”, which means “to plop in”. To achieve the best result, it is recommended to let the hair fall upside down into the towel. This ensures a natural look and prevents unnecessary tangling. Then secure everything in a turban on top of the head. This allows the mane to dry very close to the head and gives it more bounce. Because without the weight of the hair, the curls cannot hang out.

Plopping using the Curly Girl method

The plopping method became known through the Curly Girl method according to Lorraine Massey.

To gently cleanse your hair, we recommend using a conditioner instead of shampoo. This means the hair is gently cared for and protected. The conditioner can work in the hair while you comb your hair. It's best to rinse your hair with cold water afterwards, as curls don't like heat.

Finally, let the hair hang upside down and gently knead a curl care product into the hair. Flaxseed gel, a curl cream, hair oil or leave-in conditioner are particularly suitable as care products. The hair is then dried using the plopping method.

Plopping for gentle hair drying

It is best to apply a gel first before plopping and after washing your hair. The method is possible without gel, but in order to achieve long-lasting results, it is helpful that the curls do not fall out again so quickly. Place the damp hair on your head with a towel, making sure that it is not stretched by the towel and that there is enough space so that it is not flattened.

Ideally, spread the towel out on a tabletop or chest of drawers. Let the curls fall upside down and place them in the middle of the longer side of the towel. Then pull the upper half of the towel over your head to the neck area. Now carefully turn in the two corners on each side. Bring the two twisted ends to the back of the head and knot them. Easy right?

How long should I plop my hair?

The time required for plopping varies depending on the hair structure, length, individual hair type and desired residual moisture. Generally, it's recommended to plop for about 15 to 45 minutes to remove excess moisture. It is also important to consider the right material when choosing the towel. Curly'N'Covered's absorbent and soft bamboo towels are ideal for gently drying hair and minimizing the risk of frizz.

Is it possible to plop your hair in a towel overnight?

Many forums recommend wrapping your hair in a towel and letting it dry overnight. However, we would like to discourage this practice. The heat and humidity can cause bacteria to multiply on the scalp, which in the worst case scenario can lead to serious problems.

If things have to happen quickly: microplopping as an alternative

Microplopping is the alternative to the previously described variant. With this method, first comb the freshly washed hair with a Tangle Teezer-like brush. Then slightly dampen your hair and work in leave-in conditioner. Use the bamboo towel to gently press the damp curls and strands upwards. So you gradually squeeze water and conditioner from your hair into the towel,

For fine hair or if you want the curls to have more definition and volume, this method can also be used overhead. After micro-plopping, let the hair air dry (since it is no longer so wet it won't hang out as much), or continue with towel plopping.

Bamboo fabrics and silk fabrics are tested for pollutant residues. We have given top priority to safety when it comes to materials that come into direct contact with skin and hair over long periods of time. These substances are certified according to a widely used and recognized consumer protection seal

Washing: Machine wash at 30 degrees
Drying: Do not tumble dry - otherwise bamboo products may shrink due to the material's sensitivity to heat
Bleach: do not bleach
Ironing: iron at a moderate temperature without superheated steam

We source most of all fabrics except silk (bamboo, wax print, polyester) from within the EU.

We source silk fabrics from China. The quality, price and certification with regard to tested pollutant residues led us to source our silk from China. Unless otherwise stated in the product description, 22 momme is used in all silk products.

Why is there no consumer protection label on the products?

Consumer protection certifications may only be advertised and labeled if the end product in question has been correctly certified as such. In our case, only the raw materials silk and bamboo are certified, so we are not permitted to sew labels with the corresponding seal onto the products. Furthermore, we are not permitted to mention the label by name.

As a small startup, Curly'N'Covered currently lacks the resources and financial means to achieve certification of the end products. However, this should be implemented in due course.
