What is Genmaicha?
Genmaicha tea is a tea blend of green tea and roasted rice. The blend sounds unusual at first, but it is very popular in Japan and is gaining popularity all over the world. The term Genmaicha is a combination of rice (Genmai) and tea (Cha). The origin of the tea can be found in the poor areas of the country. In order to dilute the precious green tea, roasted rice was added. This made the tea cheaper and also enriched it with additional nutrients. Today, Genmaicha has a firm place in Japanese tea culture.
What is Genmaicha made of?
The base is green Bancha or Sencha tea. The later harvests of the year are usually used because these leaves have a ripe, grassy, subtly bitter aroma combined with a slight sweetness. Together with the roasted rice grains, a very special taste experience is created. The freshness of the green tea paired with nutty, slightly malty aromas and subtle sweetness that comes from the caramelization of puffed rice.
