    What is a scented candle?

A scented candle consists of wax, fragrance and a wick. A lit wick melts the wax and the scent it contains evaporates with the heat and flows into the room air. So far so simple. However, the spread of the scent and the quality of the scent depends crucially on the quality of the wax and the fragrance. Cheap candles are usually made of paraffin wax, which is a by-product of petroleum production, and use synthetic flavors and fragrances that are very cheap to produce industrially. High-quality organic scented candles, on the other hand, are made from vegetable waxes and preferably use essential oils for scenting.

    Quality of the wax

Most candles are made from paraffin. The cheap raw material has a negative ecological footprint, harms the environment and therefore also ourselves. In addition, paraffin burns relatively quickly, can produce unpleasant soot and even release questionable substances such as alkanes, alkenes, toluene or benzene into the environment. A slightly better alternative are candles made from stearin. Stearin wax has the advantage that it burns longer than paraffin candles and produces less soot. Unfortunately, most stearin candles are made from palm oil, which in turn often comes from unsustainable plantations that destroy rainforests. Inferior waxes also impair the quality of the fragrance and also reduce its production.

The natural, vegan and sustainable alternative is pure soy wax and rapeseed wax. These waxes are purely plant-based, renewable and 100% biodegradable. They will be from the Dying obtained from soybeans and rapeseed. In addition to the ecological advantage, these waxes also offer practical added value. Soy wax candles burn approximately 30%-50% slower than paraffin candles of comparable size. Due to the lower melting point, the scent spreads more evenly than with industrial candles. In addition, soy wax is completely odorless, so that the valuable fragrance additions can be optimally showcased. Rapeseed wax has similar beneficial properties to soy wax, but due to its softer structure it can only be poured into glasses without additives. In addition, rapeseed wax has a very subtle smell of its own, which is either hardly noticeable or can complement the actual scent. From a sustainability perspective, rapeseed wax is actually the better alternative, as rapeseed is grown in Europe and therefore transport routes are shorter. Soy is mainly grown in the USA, Brazil and Argentina. Responsible brands ensure that only soy from non-GMO cultivation and from sustainably managed farms is used.

Beeswax is another ecological and sustainable alternative. It is an animal product and, due to the relatively strong smell of honey, the price and the complex processing, is used more in the DIY sector or finds its fans as a niche product.

    The scent makes the difference

Fragrances can generally be divided into two categories: synthetic fragrances made in the laboratory and natural fragrances made from plant-based materials such as essential oils. Cheap synthetic fragrance oils smell pungent, have neither depth nor complexity and can trigger headaches. High-quality synthetic fragrance oils can also be an alternative for high-end scented candles. However, most brands' preference for natural and high-quality scented candles is for natural fragrances. Essential oils are basically plant extracts. They are obtained from various parts of plants (flowers, bark, leaves or fruits) by steam distillation, extraction or pressing. Essential oils have a particularly strong effect through their smell. The positive effect of essential oils on humans is undisputed among scientists and naturopaths alike. Fine scents and precious aromas can have a positive influence on our emotional balance, help us to relax and recharge our batteries, can alleviate complaints, take us to mysterious worlds and increase our general well-being. Last but not least, high-quality, exquisite scents create a great indoor climate.

    So many scents!

As in Perfumes, there is also something for everyone when it comes to scented candles. Warm, elegant and opulent like sandalwood and patchouli, sparkling like Bergamotte, mandarin or grapefruit, floral notes of lily of the valley, violet and rose or oriental moods of vetiver, amber and vanilla - the candle perfumers create pleasant, surprising and functional room scents for a perfect feel-good atmosphere. Natural scented candles underline the mood in any room, whether living room, dining room or bedroom.

    Practical information about scented candles

Proper candle care ensures the best quality and extends the burning time of a scented candle. Shorten the wick of your candle to approx. 5 mm before each lighting or after the candle has cooled. Please throw the cut part in the trash; do not leave any wick residue in your candle jar. Before lighting, make sure the wick is straight up. For even burning, the wax should melt to the edge of the vessel with each firing process to avoid hollow formation. Place the soy wax scented candle on a flat surface and protect it from drafts. It is best to let a candle burn for at least 1,5 hours to fill a medium-sized room with scent. As a rule of thumb, a 200 ml organic candle made from soy wax has a burning time of around 40 to 50 hours. For a special scent experience or even more cosiness, you can arrange several scented candles on a tray or distribute them around the room. When the candle is used up, feel free to continue using the glass. Clean it and you'll have a jam jar or pencil holder - or whatever you want!

We say: There is nothing better than relaxing with your favorite scent in a cozy atmosphere!
