What is the difference between different silks?

Silk is a fabric made of 100% natural fibers and has different names depending on the type of weave, weight and density. The weight of a woven silk fabric is determined by the thickness of the threads and the type of weave.

The warp threads are the vertical threads in a fabric, the weft threads are the horizontal threads. Depending on how the loom is constructed, ie how many warp and weft threads are separated at once, this determines the type of silk fabric produced.

Preferred of the three basic types of silk weave "satin, plain and twill weave". Holistic Silk the use of satin and plain weaves.

Mulberry silk in a satin weave

In the manufacture of satin mulberry silk, four or more weft threads are woven over a warp thread and then four warp threads are woven over a single weft thread. This diagonal floating pattern creates a high-gloss and even shine, hence the name satin. This satin weave and the pure mulberry silk fiber give our mulberry silk the mirror-smooth, friction-free surface that is so good for hair and skin.

Dupioni silk (form of mulberry silk) with plain weave

Dupioni silk, used for our lavender eye pillows and classic lavender eye masks, is made in the weft through the use of fine yarn in the warp and uneven, twisted yarn wound on by two or more intertwined cocoons. This bond creates a tightly woven silk material with a high-gloss surface. The different thickness of the silk thread in the weft creates the knobs and bumps that are characteristic of Dupion, which in turn catch the light and give the material a strikingly regal shimmer and pomp. For an even more breathtaking effect with dupioni silk, the warp and weft fibers can be colored differently to create a shot effect. This means that the color of the fabric can look subtly different depending on the viewing angle, which gives the fabric an even deeper shimmer and an exquisite quality.

Momme / thread count

You may know that cotton sheets are often referred to by thread count - momme is the silk version and refers to the number of silk threads per square inch. We use 22 momme because it's supple and smooth, yet moderate in weight. That's the highest weight we can reach without getting stiff. 22 Momme Silk is light enough to feel almost weightless, super smooth, yet durable enough for everyday use - including machine washing. This makes them the perfect choice for many of the creations of Holistic Silk.
