Emma Heywood, the founder of Beauty Kubes, reports that two years ago you became really aware of how harmful the effects of plastic actually are on our environment. Every year around 200 million tons of plastic are produced and it is estimated that 3 - 13% of it ends up in the sea! According to environmental organizations, up to 1 million seabirds and 100 marine animals die just from consuming our discarded plastics. And as we all know by now, plastic breaks down into microplastics. These are plastic particles that are smaller than 5 millimeters. Microplastics in the ocean are consumed by fish and thus enter our food chain. Microplastics are not only found in fish, but also in foods such as honey and milk. Most of the plastic bottles in Europe are made in China, so they'll have already made half a trip around the world before they get to us. And each plastic bottle is often individually wrapped again to protect it from damage in transit. In addition, although many plastic bottles are recyclable, many are not recycled and unfortunately end up in the garbage dump.
What can we do?
Emma and her partner Morten no longer wanted to take part and took on the challenge of creating cosmetic products that are free of plastics. This is how the concept of Beauty Kubes born. The small cubes completely dispense with plastic and only use cardboard and biodegradable materials as packaging material.
