Douglas Little calls his brand Heretic Perfume with a wink as a heretic of the perfume industry. As a renegade from the mainstream who does not conform to the current ideals of the masses. "Clean beauty has never been so dirty" is the motto of the Los Angeles brand, which is easy to recognize from the names of the creations: Dirty Grass, Dirty Vanilla, Dirty Suede.
His fragrances are inspired by olfactory hallucinations he experienced after a robbery in New York, or by the ritual fumigation of his apartment with juniper - an attempt to drive away the bad vibes of his hectic lifestyle in the big city. In addition to these intense impressions, he also creates perfumes inspired by flowers and plants: Voodoo Lily honors the rare devil's tongue, which only blooms for a few days a year and exudes a touch of the hidden and unfathomable with its exotic appearance. Dirty Coconut is inspired by the legendary Seychelles palm, whose fruits are considered a symbol of fertility. Yet even his gentler fragrances have a dark twist - characterized by oud, patchouli, pepper or allspice berries, which give them depth and character.

Douglas Little discovered his passion for scents at an early age: as a child, his parents gave him a dollar every time he recognized plants like lavender by their smell. As a teenager, he attended courses in Japanese flower arrangement and spent his pocket money on rare herbs.
He later traveled around Europe as art director for a hair care company, taking perfume courses in Grasse. The city on the southeast coast of France is considered the world capital of perfume and is home to the laboratories of renowned perfume houses such as Fragonard, Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior. In 2003 he founded DL & Co., with which he launched high-quality scented candles. After leaving in 2009, he designed art installations for brands such as Selfridges and Van Cleef & Arpels. A conversation with an industry expert eventually led him to perfume production - despite the skeptical prediction that natural fragrances were too expensive and unstable for the mass market.
In 2015, Little finally founded Heretic Perfume and devoted himself entirely to his vision as a perfumer and creative director. Unfortunately, his first collection of natural unisex fragrances was a flop. Customers were confused by the unusual names and complex scents. In addition, the concept of natural perfumes was difficult for many to understand, as they mistakenly thought of traditional, earthy aromas. However, Little wanted to create modern, contemporary fragrances that were not reminiscent of spa experiences or hippie clichés.
After this initial failure, Little reoriented himself, removed the less successful fragrances from the range and concentrated on the products that were well received. He then launched the "Dirty" fragrance line in 2017, which became a success and is still being expanded with new perfumes today.
Heretic Parfum uses natural ingredients to create fragrances that capture the authentic qualities of plants and flowers - from the earth to the stems to the petals. These organic imperfections and natural beauty result in an authentic fragrance experience that is fundamentally different from conventional synthetic perfumes. Although Heretic Parfum's creations are "dirty", they always remain natural because Little believes in the unique sensuality of nature.
With decades of experience, he has perfected the craft of fragrance design and, together with his seven-person team, plays a key role in the natural fragrance movement. Heretic Parfum breaks with the status quo and creates a new fragrance landscape: carefully selected, non-GMO plant ingredients are dissolved in organic sugar cane alcohol to preserve the Ayurvedic power of the plants. The unisex fragrances are created in small batches in the Los Angeles studio, handmade according to ancient perfume traditions.
The fragrances themselves are light and transparent on the skin, a refreshing departure from the heavy, chemically enriched perfumes of the traditional industry. Heretic Parfum consciously avoids chemical additives that are often used to extend shelf life. Instead, they recommend refreshing the fragrances regularly throughout the day to maintain their vibrant freshness.
In addition, Heretic Parfum perfumes are designed as functional fragrances. The gentle extraction processes of the natural fragrances ensure that their aromatherapeutic benefits are preserved. The anti-anxiety effect of sandalwood, the decelerating power of vanilla or the invigorating energy of bergamot are thus preserved and unfold with each fragrance to promote the well-being of the wearer.
Another exciting element of the brand is the Layering: Wearers are encouraged to layer two to three Heretic Parfum fragrances to create a more intense, personalized fragrance composition. This makes each fragrance a unique experience that expresses the personality and style of each individual. Heretic Parfum invites you to go beyond the boundaries of traditional perfumery and embark on an olfactory journey of discovery.
Following the success of his 2017 "Dirty" collection, Douglas Little was contacted by Gwyneth Paltrow, who discovered him through a recommendation from the Goop beauty editor. She was immediately drawn to his fragrances and appreciated their unique quality. Little remembers Paltrow suggesting, "Let's do something that smells like church and sex and all those incredible notes that you dream of as a perfumer." Their meeting resulted in a collection of four fragrances created specifically for Goop, Gwyneth Paltrow's wellness brand. One of these scents, Church, combines cypress and incense.
Little also created a fragrance for the burlesque artist Dita Von Teese: Scandalwood, a composition of sandalwood, rose and coriander. Their long-standing friendship is based on their shared passion for the rare and exquisite. Von Teese appreciates his exceptional taste and his ability to create beautiful things.
With Heretic Parfum, Douglas Little has not only created a brand, but also started a movement in the perfume industry. With a clear vision for natural scents, which are contrary to classic perfumes, it shows that it is possible to develop authentic, sensual creations from plant-based ingredients without resorting to artificial additives. The "Dirty" collection has not only successfully redefined the concept of natural perfume, but has also delighted celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Dita Von Teese. Heretic Parfum has established itself as a pioneer in the industry by breaking with traditional norms and reshaping the perception of fragrance art - both in creation and in the personal experience of the wearer.
